Pulmonary and Critical Care Division at UCI UCI Lung Center
University of California, Irvine

Henri Colt, M.D.Henri Colt, MD
Professor of Clinical Medicine
Director, Clinical Programs
Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine

Dr. Colt was recruited to UCI in 2002 from the University of California San Diego where he was Professor of Medicine and Director of interventional pulmonary services at UCSD-La Jolla. Previously, Dr. Colt had worked at the Laser Center of the University of Marseille, France. Dr. Colt was educated in the United States (University of Pittsburgh Affiliated Hospitals, Oregon Health Sciences University), and Europe (University of Nice, France). His background is multicultural, he speaks several languages, and has practiced medicine in Europe, the United States, and Africa. Dr. Colt's major focus is in education, diagnosis, treatment, and research for patients with advanced lung disorders. His areas of expertise include endoscopic (bronchoscopic) diagnosis and treatment of central airway obstruction and lung cancer, thoracoscopy, pleural disease management including malignant mesothelioma, and dealing with issues of chronic advanced lung diseases including bronchiectasis, COPD, interstitial lung disease, and end-of-life issues.

Listed annually in Best Doctors in America since 1996, and recently in Orange Coast Magazine's Best Doctors, Dr. Colt has authored over 70 peer-reviewed original research articles in addition to numerous book chapters and review papers. He is the author of a manual of pleural procedures and of a patient education manual for individuals with advanced breast cancer-related lung disease.

Dr. Colt is an associate editor for the Journal of Bronchology, the journal of respiratory treatment, is section editor for the popular UpToDate in Pulmonary Medicine, and is on the editorial board or reviewer's list for numerous medical journals. Dr. Colt has served as President of the American Association for Bronchology and is a regent of the World Bronchology Association. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Alliance for Lung Cancer Support and Education (ALCASE), and has the honor of serving as an official development consultant to the Tianjin Economic Development Area (TEDA) in Tianjin, China. As Chairman of the nonprofit organization The World Bronchology Foundation, many of Dr.Colt's activities are now dedicated to providing humanitarian aid and pulmonary procedure-related technical and educational assistance to countries in need.

He lectures internationally and in the United States on bronchoscopic laser resection (procedure shown in photo at right) and stenting, novel endoscopic technologies and teaching modalities, thoracoscopy, malignant mesothelioma, palliative cancer treatment, and emphysema. Increasingly he addresses issues pertaining to spirituality, faith, religious and cultural diversity, ethics, coping with advanced disease, humanitarian aid, palliative care, and end-of-life.

A strong advocate of a multidisciplinary approach for educating and management strategies in patients with advanced lung disorders, Dr. Colt's research efforts are geared towards studying management strategies for patients with complex pleuropulmonary or airway disease, as well as focusing on the design, implementation and dissemination of novel technologies and innovative, effective learning modalities which encompass verbal, written, video, multimedia, and virtual reality curriculums such as the recently released Essential Bronchoscopist©, a web-based tool for laddered self-learning of bronchoscopy-related theory.
