Mark Rosen, MD Associate Professor, Critical Care Hospitalist Program Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Mark Rosen, MD, joined the staff of UCI in 1997. He left his private practice in critical care medicine for his own medical reasons to volunteer his services at UCI. Dr. Rosen founded one of the largest private critical care groups in southern California and worked in that group from 1984 to 1997. Prior to this he completed residencies in internal medicine and emergency medicine at LAC-USC and UCLA Medical Centers. He then became board certified in these two fields as well as in critical care medicine. Dr. Rosen delivered medical care in the USSR during the Cold War era, assisted in the Armenian earthquake relief in 1988, as well as with victims of the war in Bosnia. His primary focus at UCI has become clinical teaching in the critical care unit. He has received awards as Clinical Instructor of the Year several times, Teacher of the Year, Alpha Omega Society Clinical Faculty Award, and was nominated for the National Award for Humanism by the American Medical Association. He has authored a variety a works including two chapters on pulmonary embolism for medical texts, a new technique for tracheostomy in patients with massive neck swelling, as well as a novel, and a political book. Dr. Rosen also was the class valedictorian for his master's degree in diplomacy. Dr. Mark Rosen has made his goal to educate doctors in training about cutting edge critical care medicine while treating patients and their families with care and dignity. He hopes to teach younger doctors and medical students when it is optimal to use modern technology. However, he stresses that such technology should not supplant a good history, physical, and clinical expertise.
