Dr. Spiritus obtained his doctorate from State University of New York prior to beginning residency and subsequent pulmonary training at the University of California, Irvine, in 1971. Since 1997 he has been the chief operating officer and senior medical director of the university hospital, taking responsibility for quality management, infection control, utilisation management and risk management for both the hospital and medical group.
Dr. Spiritus has served on the executive board of SAFER California, and has previously also served as a consultant for St. Joseph Health System Information Services and the St. Joseph Medical Group in Orange, California, prior to returning to UCI in 1996. His extensive business experiences have included management of private practice medical group, development and management of medical companies, as well as management of clinical research consultation enterprises involved in clinical trials with numerous pharmaceutical laboratories. Dr. Spiritus is a recognized leader in management of health care organizations, and is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the American College of Physician Executives.
His primary clinical interests at this time include occupation lung health and design or development of clinical trials in conjunction with other members of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
